Call to the Demonstration of Dam-Affected People against Destructive Dams in Turkey
Ankara, June 6, 2009
Yes to Our History and Future - No to Destructive Dams! Neither in Allianoi, Yusufeli, Munzur nor in Hasankeyf! Neither in Firtina, Findikli, Aksu nor in Caglayan!
Water…Culture…Peace Water and Soil…
We don’t allow anyone to take our water, our soils, our history and the future of our children. No Destructive Dams!
For dozens of years all governments of the Turkish Republic have build dams on all rivers in our country. Against humans and the nature, they have built destructive dams that have huge negative social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts.…
This dam building frenzy continues, our current government plans to build thousands more.
To date dams in Turkey around 350.000 people have been displaced and ended up in poverty. At least as many people live under the threat of displacement by dams. Numerous river systems with thousands of plants and animals species, which are the basis of our life, have already been submerged by large dam reservoirs. If all planned dams will be realized, no free-flowing river will remain in our country – all rivers will be dammed. Hundreds of cultural heritage sites with a history of up to 12.000 years, an important part of our culture, have been destroyed by dams. As if this was not enough, the government plans to destroy thousands more in Anatolia and Mesopotamia.
We are united in Turkey and say no to these destructive projects. We are fighting for a good future of our children which has to be in respect to our nature and resources.
Are your ready to sing with us, to increase the colours and to struggle? Join us!
Lets quit the shadow of fear and go to Ankara on June 6, 2009 (at 12.30 at the Sihhiye Square) to show unity against destructive dams in our geography.
For Life. For Water. For the Rivers.
